Remember why you hated school?

The Chicago Public Schools system is a perfect example of why Communism does not work.

From wiki: "Chicago has a history of high dropout rates, with around half of students failing to graduate for the past 30 years. Criticism is directed at the CPS for inflating its performance figures. Through such techniques as counting students who swap schools before dropping out as transfers but not dropouts, it publishes graduation claims as high as 71%."

Of course the politicians lie about the school's performance, they get to handle a lot of money and power by controlling the education of the young! Of course the politicians always distract you from the real reason the school system SUCKS. They say things like "test scores are down! we need more resources!" or "classrooms are too crowded we need to expand our teacher base!".  Interesting how these all involve simply stealing more money from property owners.

No question is raised about innovating the schools or opening up the industry to real competition is raised, because sadly these questions cannot be raised.  The schooling of the young has been Nationalized (to use a more 'murican friendly term) and that is undeniable.  Some people believe this nationalization is the only way the young can be educated, but I ask to you consider something for a moment...
You are undoubtedly using a computer right now, correct?  That computer is like, 50 times more badass than the computer you had in 2001, right? Well, sir, that is because the computer industry is one of the last havens which has no government regulations at all. Imagine what would've happened if every upgrade to your GPU would've had to get approved by the Bureau of Computer Safety or something like that?

Well flip to the opposite side.  The entire field of education is dictated, not even just overseen like I suggested above, by a total government bureaucracy.  The interests of these political bureaucrats is so entrenched that the original model (used by fascistic Prussians) is STILL being used here in America.
So in a free market you get to "vote" with your dollar. To keep your vote, businessmen run a tight ship in the face of competition, trying to provide you products and services at their highest quality and lowest possible price depending on your needs.
In a coercive monopoly setting like Public Education you get to vote for strangers based on promises to spend OTHER people's money.  No valuable feedback in the face of competition can be provided because everybody MUST attend a school certified by the State, and even if there was feedback somehow, there wouldn't really be an incentive to change the school bureaucracy because both the taxes to pay for it AND attendance itself are enforced by force.

Welcome to America.

  1. I don't think that communism has no place.
It's place just hasn't been found yet.

Marx himself said that it would only work if it was basically elected democratically. So far it's only been implemented by force.

  3. @Timberman: we have dozens of communist countries in history of the world. Do you still think that after all those failures there is hope for communism?

Nice post mate, keep it up, I'm going to check you up once in a while!

  5. Unfortunately I think government has nothing to do with the public school system. I'm not saying one form of government is worse/better than another, but the school system is something else

My mother, as well as a good majority of her side of the family, is a teacher and has been for coming on 30 years now. She teaches in a very poor district and you can see where the school system fails.

  6. A state of real communism is very hard to archive. The more people live in a society the more difficult it gets.

  7. There are things we should take from the communism and capitalism I think ... they are the two extremities and I guess there's a perfect inbetween.

  8. Funny how my school got a 100% graduation. But then again, this is a different country.

  9. Capitalism is everywhere. We are stuck in a world filled with greed. Anyhow I wish there are more people like me who don't care about money.

  13. Dude. I agree 100%. This is the reason we are getting rid of NASA and privatizing the space industry. Competition breeds innovation. You wouldn't have a refrigerator if it wasn't for the free market. But what I Wonder is why we never hear about this issue on the news? I've never heard anyone mention privatization of schools. Anyway, fantastic post!

  18. It's a shame that most American schools fail to meet standards. It sucks even more to know that other states are lowering their standards to no look as bad as Chicago's school.

If Arne Duncan doesnt change this country's educational systems, our next generation will be doomed to mediocrity and failure.

    Great writeup, man
